Router configuration

Hi to all learned friends,

I am using a Q-Tec 4 port hard wired router between 2 comps dual boot on
the two, but on separate drives within each.

at the moment i am using auto ip selection which is fine , network and
internet shows up. Problem starts when i reboot to the other drive
a different ip is issued which also shows up in ZAlarm ,this can get a
little above me ,especially if i also reboot on the 2nd comp.
I sometimes loose the internet connection or the network.

I have had a look at the gateway connections on the router , there is
provision for static ip's etc, which i am unfamiliar with.

Re-dual boot , i am using XP home & Xp Pro on the 2 comps , so the ip,s
can change which also needs resetting within ZAlarm .
i have ZAlarm running on the 4 channels. Prior to this firewall i was
using NTL's Netguard , but it was'nt up to the standard of
IE7 , the system kept crashing, it is certainly better now .

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you picoHat ,to replying so soon.

I have looked in the browser .Tools/Options/Connections where i come to
LAN Settings , is this the section i need to enter the IP address?

i thought it was possible to do this from the router itself? i am still
unsure.
Ain't so sure about hope.....deejaydee

To change to static addressing, you much remove use of dhcp on each
computer, and you might as well disable dhcp in your router.
In addition, you edit the Hosts file to show the ip address of each computer
and of the router (just makes logging on to the router more
consictent). Each computer must have the same information. With only two
computers, it isn't hard to keep these files consistent.

The Hosts file is \windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts (with no extension).

Deejaydee,

To manually assign IP in either version of XP do this:

1) Goto: Control Panel>Network Connections
2) Right click on local area connections and choose properties
3) Double click on Internet Protocol TCP/IP
4) Assign your IP addresses making sure to put in your subnet mask and
feault gateway (IP of router)

If you do not know your default gateway it is the same as what you are
currently assigned. You can determine it by:

1) Click on start
2) Click Run
3) Type CMD
4) Click ok
5) In the dosprompt type ipconfig

This will also give you your subnet mask

Lastly go into the router and turn off DHCP in the router.

Hope that helps.
