Roaming profile - favorites reappear after deletion (Laptop User)

S

Scotty_ed

Got a laptop user who works both online and offline. When he deletes
favorites whether online or offline, they will reappear at the next online
login.

We are using Folder redirection for My Documents and Desktop and offline
files are used in conjunction with this.

We are also using roaming profiles.

I've deleted the the favorites from the server copy of his profile in the
meantime but it doesn't stop the issue reoccuring?

Dear Customer,

Thank you for posting in newsgroup.

I am a little unclear whether you try to delete the Favorites shortcut
items or the whole Favorites folder.

Scenario 1: Delete the Favorites folder
-------------------------------------------
It should be expected that Favorites folder will reappear once you logon to
the laptop even though Favorites has been removed manually both in roaming
profile and local cached profile. Favorites folder is a essential part of
Internet Explorer and it always be checked and created if missing. If the
Favorites folder is deleted in the roaming profile, the local recreated
folder will be updated to the roaming profile when the user is logoff from
the computer.

So if you want to leave the Favorites folder empty, please try to delete
all shortcuts in it instead of deleting the Favorites folder.

Scenario 2: Delete the Favorites shortcut items
----------------------------------------------------
When the user tries to log off from the laptop that is online, the local
cached profile with Favorites shortcut items will be updated to the roaming
profile.

When the user tries to log on to the laptop that is online, the local
cached profile will get updates from the roaming profile including the
Favorites shortcut items.

So try the following steps to avoid deleted items from reappearing:

1. Make sure the laptop in online.
2. Delete the items in the local cached profile.
3. Log off the logon user to update the roaming profile.

Hope it helps.

Sincerely,
Miles Li

Hi Miles,

It's simply a case of users trying to delete individual favorites shorcuts
when online (not the folder) - Using IE to delete a favorite. (The favorites
are all users added)

When the user logs off, then on again the shorcuts are back. Also tried
getting the user to browse to the local cache in their profile and delete
from there - same result. The only way I have sucessfully managed to delete
the favorites is to browse the the network share with the roaming profiles on
it and delete them from there (Not something I want to keep having to do!!).

Cheers
Scott

Hello Scott,

From your description, I'd like to know whether the roaming profile has
been set to Mandatory Profiles. A Mandatory Roaming Profiles will prevent
the update from the local cache profile to the roaming profile. It helps to
keep the consistency of the user profile from being changed.

Follow the steps below to test whether the mandatory Roaming Profiles is
enabled or not:

1. Logon to the laptop online.
2. Create a new empty folder in the '%userprofile%' such as 'C:\Documents
and Settings\<user_name>'.
3. Log off the user from the laptop.
4. Verify whether the empty folder is updated to the shared folder that
holds Roaming Profiles.

Also please check whether offline folder is enabled on the shared folder
that holds Roaming Profiles. To view offline folder settings:

1. Right click the shared folder--->Sharing--->Caching.
2. Verify whether 'All files and programs that users open from the share
will be automatically' option is choosed. If yes, disable offline folder.

Hope it helps.

Sincerely,
Miles Li
