RFC definition syntax

Can anyone tell me where the RFC definition syntax is documented? I am
referring to such things as the use of <...>, [...], 1*, etc. I find
this sort of thing in the RFC's for POP3, MIME, etc.

I'd expect the RFC to say, even just an informal ref. to, e.g.,
RFC822.

You might care to look at RFC4234 though - a draft standard
obsoleting RFC2234:

Thanks, that clarified things. For anyone interested, RFC2045 for MIME
makes reference to RFC822 for background. Even so, RFC822 has now been
obsoleted by RFC2822.
