Review menu functions slow the program

When I use any of the review functions -- especially track changes, but just
now the thesaurus as well -- the entire program slows down to the point that
I type faster than the words appear on the screen. My computer itself does
not slow down and other programs work fine.
I am using Word 2007 on a Vista Home Premium computer with 3 G of RAM.
