return receipts bouncing back to my colleagues instead of coming t

I didn't find this issue in the forum search.

I've been notified by a colleague that my return receipt (which they've
allowed) is not making it through. Error is coming to back to him:

"The message could not be sent. The authentication setting might not be
correct for your outgoing e-mail [SMTP] server. For help solving this
problem, go to Help, search for "Troubleshoot Windows Mail", and read the
"I'm having problems sending e-mail" section. If you need help determining
the proper server settings, please contact your e-mail service provider.

The rejected e-mail address was '" <[email protected]'. Subject 'Read: return
receipt test', Account: 'xxxxx', Server: 'smtp.telus.net', Protocol: SMTP,
Server Response: '501 Bad recipient address syntax', Port: 25, Secure(SSL):
No, Server Error: 501, Error Number: 0x800CCC79"

I have reproduced the effect:

Email from home to work - sent/received OK, including getting return receipt
back

Email from work to home - sent/received OK, but return receipt does not go
through to work address

Lay that magic fix on me. Thanks in advance.

entered your address correctly in the Reply To box. The error is telling us
that something's incorrect.

We can't very well troubleshoot a "Bad recipient address syntax"
if you did not include the recipient's address.

It looks to me like you haven't specified a nickname to put before your
return address, and the recipient's email program can't deal with sending
return receipts to return addresses that don't have one. Why don't you
specify one, then try again, and see if it makes a difference?

There's also the possibility that it can't deal with sending return receipts
to email addresses that start with a space or the < character, so also check
if your return address does.
