Return Adress for Envelopes in Word

D

Dave S

We are addressing envelopes to a formal event and want to
be able to print the Return Address on the back flap of
the envelope.
I have put in the custom size of the envelpe and only see
as options; the Delivery Address and Return Address which
are both set to print in the standard locations; Bottom
Middle and Top Left.
Can anyone advised how to print the return address on the
back flap?

Much the simplest way would be to create a new envelope sized document (use
the envelope template from the downloads page of my web site as a start
point if it helps) and put on it the return address as desired and print the
backs of the envelopes as a separate print run. I suspect duplex printing or
attempting to print the envelopes with the flaps open would be more trouble
than it is worth for the relatively small amount of time that potentially
coule be saved..

You can't do this through the Envelopes and Labels dialog. You'll have to
create a special template for the purpose. How you approach this will depend
partly on how cooperative your printer driver is about custom sizes, but do
plan on one thing: print these envelopes the way a commercial printer would,
with the flap open. Otherwise (a) the uneven surface will result in uneven
inking or toner application and (b) your envelope is more likely to get
crumpled.

The only really practical way to approach this is to feed the envelope face
up (or down depending on your printer), with the bottom edge leading, from
the manual feed tray. So open the flap of an envelope, turn it upside down
(so that the flap faces you and the printing that would be on it would read
right-side-up), and measure it carefully to determine where the text should
print. Then create a document of the requisite size (oversized if your
printer requires you to treat it as Letter or A4) and set the margins such
that the address will print in the right place. Keep testing on plain paper
and comparing it to your envelope till you get it right.

Good luck.
