Retaining account info in imported messages

Hi. I've moved my Outlook Express mail store many times (new laptop or
whatever) and I've always been able to retain the account each email came
from by editing the Internet Account Manager stuff in the registry -- for
example, my Earthlink account had an ID of 0000000b and my Comcast account
had an ID of 00000009. When I set those values in regedit and copied the .dbx
files into the new OE folder, OE knew which accounts the old emails came from.

Now I don't see any way I can retain the account tag on the emails I'm
importing into Windows Mail because the messages are converted to .eml files
and I can't see any account IDs on the .eml files. Is there any way I can
keep the account tags? I always create custom views based on the account the
messages came from.

Thanks!

On the old computer go too Tools | Accounts and export each account. Then
import the resulting IAF file into Windows Mail.

Thanks, but that's not the jist (sp?) of my question. How can I get Windows
Mail to know which account the imported emails came from? I add the Account
column to my view and Windows Mail doesn't show the account for the imported
emails. I can't create a custom view that filters based on the account the
message came from. If I receive NEW emails, Windows Mail shows the account.
So, how can I get the OLD emails to show the account they came from? In OE,
I had to edit the Internet Account Manager keys to get it to work. Somehow
the .dbx files stored the Account tag and retained it when I moved the .dbx
files to a new laptop. Do you understand what I'm getting at? Thanks!

Imported emails do not have account information.
As far as I know, there is no workaround for that.

Boy, I hope there's some workaround because I've got years of emails that I
really like to view by account. Maybe if I knew how Windows Mail keeps track
of the account on NEW emails I could figure out a way to backtrack. Thanks
for the reply.

Here's a question: can I install Outlook Express 6 on Vista? Then I can go
on with my .dbx files.

Each email in Windows Mail has its own .eml file. Extraneous
information like download account and read/unread status is not
kept with the message file, but is stored in a database file called
WindowsMail.MSMessageStore. It is not user readable.

Wow. I'm really disappointed that MS decided to go that way. Thanks anyway
for the (bad) news.
