retail upgrade from MSDN

I have a system running Windows 98, if I use the MSDN cd to install
XP, can I subsequently activate it using an *upgrade* key or does it
have to be a key for the full version? I have the Windows 98 media.

The MSDN installation CDs for Windows XP will only accept
a Windows XP "Full Retail Version" product key, not an upgrade key.
