Result of SUM is #

I have a spreadsheet where the result of using autosum is displayed as a
single #.
Some of the cells being summed contain a 'x' but even if I chnage all these
to numerics I still end up with #.
I've tried reformatting the cells. This autosum is of 26 contiguos cells in a
row. Funny thing is autosumming the same data down a column is OK.
Any ideas folks?!

Have you tried widening the column. If the number is too big, it will show
up as #'s.

Michael, yes, tried that but even if I expand the column to a screen wide it
just keeps looking at me!

HOLD THE FRONT PAGE! Have just sussed it. # is showing the cell IS too small
for the number. The person seems to have changed the orientation of the cells
to vertical. Therefore if you increase the height of the cell the answer
appears with the numbers one above the other!
