Restoring VISTA boot after ubuntu removal?

H

Harry Krause

Well, I deleted ubuntu from the second hard drive but forgot that it
left its boot loader behind. So, now I have a machine that boots up
with the following:

GRUB loading, please wait

Error 17

I cannot find the damned GRUB loader in my C directory, but it has to be
there, eh?

So, how do I get rid of it and restore my normal VISTA bootup?

Thanks!

Repair install Vista.

Grub left a pointer in the MBR to itself on your second drive. When
you wiped it out, its pointer pointed to nothing. Vista can fix the MBR.
Boot from the Vista DVD, find repair bootup, tell it to repair bootup.

this used to be restored with a simple

fdisk /mbr

i don't know ubuntu cd, but there used to be tools for that in mostly linux
boot cd's... try boot again with the ubuntu disk and see the messages
before the installing process, there is usual a F1 that leads you to a set
of tools when sould be a MBR restauration tool

Noooooooooo!

What, exactly your problem? Repair install Vista repairs the master
boot record which Grub had changed for its on use. After doing that,
Vista will boot normally.

I saw no such tool.

Further, I followed to the letter MS's VISTA instructions for restoring
the boot file, from bootrec.exe:

bcdedit /export c:\bcd_backup
c:
cd boot
attrib bcd -s -h -r
ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old
bootrec /rebuildbcd

I got the proper response to each step, but...
when I rebooted, I still had the damned GRUB bootloader taking control.

My conclusion for the moment is that GRUB behaves like a virus.

Any suggestions?

never saw this sequence before...

Well, i feel the same every time i have to reinstall windows on a multi-boot
pc, windows allways re-write the MBR for just "is own" without asking
nothing at all, leaving other systems desabled until i reinstall the boot
loader.

Any suggestions?
Chek the ubuntu cd more careful, theres got to be a tool you need there, or
find some other boot cd ou diskette with ms-dos and fdisk, then boot up and
do

fdisk /mbr

I wouldn't recognize the ubuntu tool if I tripped over it, nor do I know
the syntax.

No he doesn't. This guy has already proven his inability to google on the
ubuntu newsgroups.

This makes two newsgroups now where he's proving his inability to google and
apparently use a computer.

if you got a copy of vista you could install it on another partition or drive, then you will have your vista boot back but with two vista's on it.The new vista will be the top one so use easy bcd to remove it and diskmanger in windows to delete the new vista.its a bit longwinded but it works...;)
