Restoring DC System State onto Another Server

Hi,

Can you restore a DC system state onto a completely
different server with different hardware? If so how?
Everytime I have tried the server does not boot giving an
error of "inaccessible boot device". I've tried via F8
method.

If not, is it possible to get the information out of the
NTDS.dit file into the new NTDS.dit file created by the
new installation?

Hi

If you have another good DC on the same site just install
W2k? and do a DCPROMO much cleaner

you must install windows 2000 server. Then reboot and go into Directory
restore mode and retore the system state. After that use ntdsutil to do a
authoritave restore if this is the only DC in the domain. If it is not the
only DC in the domain i would just do a metadata cleanup on the existing AD
and then promote the server back to a DC.
