Restoring C - drive.

Hello,
First I would like to say Thank You to all the people
that help us at this web site. I appreciate the help I
have gotten very much, Thanks again!

I have a NoteBook computer running Windows XP Home
Edition with service pack 2. After I setup Windows to my
preference, loaded all my software and updated Windows
with all the UpDates, I made a bootable mirror image of
my hard drive so if anything went wrong I would have a
recover backup so I would not have to go through all that
again. This worked out great with my Desktop PC because
it has 2 hard drives, but I ran into a problem with my
NoteBook PC because of it only having one drive. I use a
program called "Boss Backup 2" and made the mirror image
of my NoteBook hard drive to a USB external hard drive,
which worked great. There is a problem with this software
however, you have to be running from the source disk to
make a mirror copy to the Target drive. This is not a
problem when the PC has to hard drives because you can
always boot to the other drive. I since found out that
you can not boot to a USB drive using any Windows O.S. In
order to put the mirror image of the USB drive back to my
NoteBook C drive I have to be able to boot up onto the
USB drive, which I can't because of Windows. Does anyone
know of any other way to get all the information from the
USB drive back to my C drive so my computer will be like
it was when I made this mirror image drive? Any help
would be deeply appreciated and thank you in advance!

Sincerely,
Jim Huber

It isn't Windows that is determining whether you can boot from a USB
drive; it is the BIOS on your laptop. Enter the BIOS set up and see if
you have the option to boot from a USB drive in the boot order entry.
If you are unsure, check with the laptop mftr. You may need to update
your BIOS.

Hi Malke,

Thank you for the information about the BIOS. I read on
pasting postings on this site that it was Windows that
was stopping the computer from booting to the USB drive.
On my Desktop PC at startup it tells you to hit
the "Delete" key to enter the BIOS. My Laptop does not
give any such information. It is a Toshiba Satellite A65-
S1062. Do you know how to enter the BIOS on this type of
Laptop PC? Any help you can give me would be deeply
appreciated. I am not really that smart when it comes to
computers. As I am sure you noticed by the stupid
questions I ask.

Thanks again!
Sincerely,
Jim

Toshiba usually have a Toshiba tools in the Start Menu - All Programs
that includes BIOS options. Also my Portege Tablet has a hot key system
to select the boot device. It can boot a Toshiba CD drive on a PC card,
or a Toshiba floppy drive on USB but doesn't boot a USB DVD drive I have
- consult its manual

Hi Alex,

I went to Toshiba's web site and found out how to get
to the Bios on my Laptop. I also found the lastest Bios
Update and installed it, 1.50. It does not give you a
choice to boot to a USB drive, but one of the choices is
a LAN. I don't know much or understading Networking other
then I am on one. I can hook my USB drive up to my Router
(a NetGear WGT634U) and access it that way. By setting
the Bios to boot to LAN will it boot off of the USB drive
like that? Do I have to do anything else? I am sorry to
keep bothering you. My only other recourse is to spend
more money to do what I am looking to do and I am hoping
to avoid that.

Thanks again!
Sincerely,
Jim

Hi Li'l Roberto,

Thank you for your suggestion of pressing the F2 key.
Some of the Toshiba PCs do enter the Bios that way. I
went to the Toshiba web site and found out how to enter
mine. You first have to hit the Esc key and then F1.

Thanks again!
Sincerely,
Jim

I really don't know; I think you would need something more 'active' than
a simple drive; but have never tried. All I can suggest is try and see
