Restoring a Win98 backup file after upgrading to XP

I recently upgraded to XP and created backup files using the MSBackup utility
prior to doing so. The files were created with the .qic extension. The XP
utility does not recognise this file type. Is there any way to restore these
files on this PC?

No "Painless" way, but here is an option. Microsoft offers a 45
day free trial of it's Virtual PC software. It allows you to run a
complete OS in a protected/virtual environment.
If you have original Windows 9x/ME install media you can get
the trial version of VPC-2004 and create a Virtual machine.
If your computer has a Network Interface card you can create
a membership with your existing XP Workgroup.
Once you have your 9X/ME install running you can recover the
data from the backup and then network the data to your XP
instance.
Not at all easy - but it can be done. Virtual PC's work just like
any other with a BIOS setup, Virtual drives, etc. VPC-2004 does
not support USB devices but that shouldn't hinder you from
recovering your data using VPC.
The trial download version is found at:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...d6-5098-4c64-9ca7-a30f225859f6&DisplayLang=en

There is also a MS Newsgroup for Virtual PC 2004
The learning curve to use the software is probably a couple of
hours.

Restore them to another win98 machine, copy them to CD/DVD and transfer
that way. Another option is use a backup program that is compatible
with both. I have heard that Stompsoft's Backup MyPC can do it.

You need third party software - I understand that the demo version of
BackUP My PC, from www.stompinc.com will read these files 9and is a good
backup program to get for XP as well)

An alternate method is to connect the XP machine to a Win98 machine via
crossover cable or small LAN. On the Win98 machine, restore the files to a
specific folder, then simply copy the folder using Explorer on the XP
machine (since this will not require extra user accounts).

And yes, this problem is due to the lack of backwards support in the MS
Backup utility.

No, this has nothing to do with backwards compatability. NTBackup,
which has shipped with NT for a LONG time, has existed as long as the
back up progam in Win98. It is just that the two programs used
different backup formats.

You might as well complain that you can't read WordStar files made
using the CP/M version of WordStar using Word.
