Restore Points

I am no longer able to create a retore point. I can't install any new
softwarre because the system tries to create a restore point and it never
does anything. I can't even see prior restore points. Is there anything
that will fix this problem without reinstalling Vista?

If I remember correctly.... vista needs at least 15GB free hard drive space
to create restore points. Vista itself purges older restore points in order
to make room for new ones.
how much free space on your hard drive?

I have over 300GB of unused disk space so space is not the problem. I
believe that problem was caused by using PCmover software. I found that
other people had the same problem with the restore point process not working.
They had to reinstall Vista. I have never done this before so I don't know
if I will have to reinstall all of my other software like MS Office after I
reinstall Vista.

Do you have a Norton product installed? Norton will interfere with creating
System Restore points. Otherwise, please try and answer:

The First Question Of Troubleshooting: If the problem is new, what changed
between the time things worked and the time they didn't?

The Second Question of Windows Troubleshooting: what is the malware/virus
status of the machine? If you think it is clean, what programs (and
versions) did you use to determine this?

Repair System Restore - The command-line parameter is case sensitive:

1. Insert the Windows XP CD
2. Click [Start] [Run]
3. Type the following command (case sensitive):
rundll32.exe advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection C:\Windows\Inf\sr.inf [enter]

System Restore core files should be reinstalled. Alternately, you may also
open Windows Explorer, navigate to "C:\Windows\Inf" folder and right-click
sr.inf (choose Install).

System Restore disabled, probably by malware:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\SystemRestore
In the right-pane, delete the value "DisableConfig".

Addendum - Sorry, I just realized you are using Vista and not XP (lost my
place in the newsgroups). The information I gave you in my previous post
about Norton and answering the First and Second Questions of
Troubleshooting is still valid.

Thanks for your response. Yes, I am running Norton 360. I have tried
turning all firewall and virus protection off but have the same results. I
will try to follow the steps that you suggested to Repair the System Restore
programs. If that doesn't work then I will try to reinstall Vista without
formatting my hard drive. If that doesn't work then I guess I will have to
start with a clean hard drive. Is that what you think I should do?

No, I would just uninstall Norton and use a better product. I recommend
NOD32 for a commercial program and Avast for a free one. I bellieve your
System Restore may work just fine after getting rid of Norton.

Now I think that I am really in trouble. I can't uninstall Norton or
anyother program. It says that another installer is running. I think that
Vista is trying to create another restore point and that isn't working.
Also, now I get error code 80004002 when I try to check for Windows updates
and I get the following error when I reboot: Error in SRCLIENT.dll Missing
entry: CreateFirstRunRp.

Try and use the following tool from Symantec to remove Norton. After it is done
reboot and then post back and we will try and tackle the other issues

Google for ERUNT , which is a system restore also giving a daily
restore point .
