Restore CD, OEM and Product Key question

Gordon

I have an Acer F1 desktop that came with a Restore CD. That CD is damaged
and will not run. (Acer require £50 for a replacement). As I have an OEM
Product Key, will any OEM XP Pro Cd work? (ie like one off EBay for
example)? And yes I have all the Acer-specific drivers on another CD that I
created from their website...

A generic OEM install disk that matches the XP version should work with
your Product Key. You may need to call for activation. I would be very
hesitant to purchase XP from eBay and would suggest that replacing the
Acer restore cd is the better choice, but that's your decision.

It says that it's a genuine holographic OEM CD, new. the picture certainly
looks OK. the problem with the Acer recovery Cd (as with any Recovery CD)
is that you can't do a repair install......(amongst other things...)

Well, as I said that's your choice. ;-) Me, I always buy from reputable
sources such as Amazon or NewEgg but they aren't particularly cheap. The
XP Pro OEM disks I just bought were $150 each.

Tiger Direct sells XP Professional OEM for around ~$139. Comes
in a sealed envelop with brochure/COA sticker. Last one I bought
included the Vista upgrade coupon. Unless you're a risk taker I'd
probably pass on ANY software from eBay.

An unbranded, generic OEM CD for the same version (WinXP Pro vs. WinXP
Home vs. WinXP MCE) should work with the OEM Product Key that you have.

However, getting a legitimate license of any kind, or even the product
pictured, from eBay is something of a crap shoot. One should be very
careful buying any software on eBay, as eBay makes no prior effort to
ensure that such sales are legitimate. The problems stem from two
completely different sources, but have the same results: the buyer gets
ripped off. A great many people don't fully understand the terms of the
license they own, and don't understand that they cannot legitimately
resell it, and - worse still - there are a great many sellers who do
know that they're selling bogus licenses. eBay reacts only when someone
files a complaint, and then all that really happens, especially in the
case of the many deliberate fraudsters, is the seller of the pirated
software returns using a different alias, to continue selling
illegitimate licenses.

You have better luck to check any local used computer shops or computer
fairs in your area, so you can actually see and verify what you're getting.

Hello Malke
Don't you find that the price of those installation CD's a bit of a rip-off
since it is just used to install xp, aren't you just really supposed to be
paying for the product key?which the cd does not come with?
Maybe it is best for Gordon to go around computer shops and see if they have
installation cd's, I'm sure they have plenty.
Then he can just use his product key
