Restoration from archive backup

Lynn

Hi!

I had to re-install all software on my laptop and tried to backup my Outlook
2007 files first. Now, I cannot get the archive backup file to import into
Outlook 2007. I have tried various things. My most recent attempt was to
rename the file to Outlook and put it where Outlook 2007 supposedly looks for
contacts, etc. However, now I receive the following error message:
Cannot start Microsoft Office Outlook. Cannot open the Outlook window. The
set of folders cannot be opened. File access is denied. You do not have the
permission required to access the file c:\Users\Lynn
Schnaufer\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst.
I search Microsoft's website for this error message with no luck.
I also tried the scanpst.exe repair tool but received a message that,
although 11 errors were identified, the file could not be repaired because it
was read-only. So, then I tried to remove the read-only attribute using
Properties with no success. So, then I tried to remove the read-only
attribute using run: cmd attrib -r -s c:\archive backup (as instructed on
Microsoft's website) but kept getting an error message about incorrect
parameters.
Please help. I am desperate not to lose my Contacts and Date Book.

Have you tried opening Outlook and using File/Open/Outlook Data File?

See here on how to restore Outlook data properly:
How to backup and restore Outlook

http://www.howto-outlook.com/howto/backupandrestore.htm
http://www.slipstick.com/config/backup.htm
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HA010771141033.aspx

There is out-dated information on some of these pages, specifically with
regard to Outlook 2003 and 2007.

The main points to note:
1. Do NOT use the import/export function to move Outlook data from one
version to another - all you need to do is to copy the pst file, with
Outlook closed.

2. Do NOT paste the copied pst file into the default location - paste into
(for example) your Documents folder and then do File-Open-Outlook Data File
within Outlook.
