Restart

When I install a program or update which requires a restart, the computer closes
and starts to restart, showing the first flash screen, and then just sits there.
I have to switch off and then power up, and then I get the improper start
screen with the choices to restart as usual, restart at a known good profile,
etc. I just restart as normal, and all is well again.. I can't think of
anything I've done to cause this. Anyone have an answer to this?

Well, what are you installing, and how long does it just 'sit there'
for? if you do alot of updates, installs, patches, etc... between
reboots, you should anticipate that it will take a really long time.
is your hard drive light flashing while your computer just sits there
(if so, your machine is still working on something and you should let
it do its thing.) do you have your ipod, or some other external USB
plugged in that needs unmounting? when was the last time you
defragged? is outlook sychronizing? please provide a few more details.
Overall though, i think you should shut down and walk away. if you
machine is still on 1 hr later, do some more troublehsooting.

Methinks you've given me the answer! I have an external USB drive that I use
for video work storage and usually just leave turned on. I just did the "Safely
Remove Hardware" thing, turned it off, and now restart works like it should.
Just what does "unmounting" mean? Is it something different from just turning
off the power to a USB connected device?

Thanks for the help, safely filed away for next time.

Glad i could help out. A hard drive is 'mounted' when the computer
sees it and gives it a drive letter. Sometimes when you shut down your
computer while you have USB devices plugged in, it gets a little scared
and sits there. i don't know why
