Resolution Automatically reverting

Whenever someone with standard user rights log on to any computer on our
domain, their resolution reverts back to 1280X1024. We have many employees
that prefer 800X600 resolution size. If you give them local admin rights, it
works just fine but when you change them back to standard user, the
resolution changes back to 1280X1024.

All computers are running XP Pro with Service Pack 2. They are all HPs,
some new and some a few years old. They all have 17" LCD displays of all
different brands.

Anyone have any ideas? Any registry keys I need to edit or maybe some
change in local group policy?

The idea I have is to leave it at whatever is the native resolution of
the LCD monitors. If the monitor is natively 1280 x 1024, leave it there.
If it's 1024 x 768 set it to that.

An LCD monitor will ALWAYS look it's best when the display resolution is
set to the native resolution of the panel.

The reason people prefer 800 x 600 is because everything is physically
bigger, because the pixel are physically bigger. As a side effect, the
picture looks horrible, with the monitor trying to scale the signal up to
the native panel resolution.

The correct way to make window elements larger is to go into 'Display
Properties' -> 'Appearance' -> 'Advanced' and change the size of the
individual display elements of Windows. Increase the icon size 4 or 5
pixels, the icon font size a notch or 2, etc. The drop-down box on that
dialog box has many more elements that can be adjusted than the view at
the top of the dialog box.

Increasing the size this way will result in a much better, more crisp
display, which in turn will be easier on the eyes.

Another recomendation is to go to the MS website and lookup ClearType for
Windows XP. This should greatly improve the look of the screen fonts. It
usually does wonders on an LCD panel for readability.

Normally I would agree with this but when you have 50-60 computers with the
same problem and have users that have very little understanding of how to use
a computer, (they have to call I.T. to adjust screen resolution for them)
plus many share the same workstation, it will be almost impossible to adjust
all the settings to make everyone happy.

We also have 3rd party software that was designed (poorly) to work at
800X600 and we can't use any other software, for this purpose, because of
weird state regulations.
