Matt - You're right. I had something else in my head. Anyways, with the
gadgets out, there isn't much reason to close, except for a slight blackness.

If you EXIT Sidebar from the Taskbar you will close any gadgets on the
Desktop.......BUT! if you right click the Sidebar where there is no
gadgets you can select 'Close Sidebar' and now any gadgets you have
on the desktop will not close but the sidebar itself will close.

You can't resize it, the narrow look is dependent on your screen resolution.
You can turn off the On Top Look, though. Click Start > type Sidebar
Properties > uncheck 'Sidebar is always on top of other windows. Its not a
solution, but a more pleasant look and feel to the Sidebar and it looks less
intrusive with bright wallpapers too.
