Resetting the default program that a file type opens with

Please bear with me, I am super unsavy with all this. I have a type of file
that is supposed to remain as "unknown application" in order to open
properly. Not realizing, I attempted to select a program from the list of
programs windows offered me. The problem is that it now incorrectly opens in
every program on that list except the one that it should. Is there a way to
get back to the "unknown application" that it was originally listed as?
Thanks so much.

You call it "unknown application"? Are generalizing? just not giving us info?

Don't know of any program that will not open unless it nows the program
(file assoc)!!

You just want to restore to program ABC?

Right-click the file you want to open in a different program, and then click
Properties.
On the General tab, click Change.
Click the name of the program in which you want the file to open.
