Request for Logon password when none set

When I started my laptop this morning XP requested a logon password. I've
never had a password and it has never asked before. It won't start windows.
I'm travelling and don't have my system disks with me. I use it everyday and
it shut down normally last night. It has been kept updated and has current
antivirus protection.
Can anyone help or is this thing dead for the duration?

You have of course, tried just pressing Return for the password, right?
And have done a Restart of course, since it's a laptop?

I've tried multiple times...including "administrator" account. It appears that something changed the domain. I've tried safe mode, debug mode...I can,t get in...still exploring other options. Anyone heard of any new threats in the last day? Possible auto update that failed to return machine to original state after completion?

If you suspect your domain may be changed, you may have fallen into the
situation described by this article:

"You cannot log on after you remove the computer from the domain"
<http://support.microsoft.com/kb/317049>

When I travel, I always make sure that I have an active local
administrative logon to the computer just for this eventuality.

Thanks John...very helpful. It appears after reading all of the articles related in the KB that the laptop is indeed dead for the duration as I do not have either the system disks, password reset disk, or a bootable XP system disk with me. I still have no idea how the laptop became associated with a domain or if one even exists. Looks like it will be a system rebuild when I get home. Thanks!
