REQ: word processor for Word's passworded documents

REQUEST:

Is there a free word processor for XP that can access password-
protected MS Word documents if I supply the password?

---

I've uninstalled Microsoft Office after getting some "unfixable"
gremlins and am now using Atlantis to open my MS Word documents.

However I want to keep the password protection on some of these Word
documents although it seems Atlantis can't use MS Word passwords.

I don't whether these programs do or not, but try Googling for Abiword
and OpenOffice.

FWIW, I just passworded a doc in MS Word on one computer,
transferred to another computer & tried to open with Open Office.

No go. No surprise.

Install only WORD for Windows. I would recommend at least the Office97
version (I think it´s WORD 8), it´s very compatible (up and down).

I have let one time the Office drawer, and tried to install it (Office
XP). The leave much drawer, was an updated Office XP from the last
Windows installation. It made big troubles to the new office install.
Some programs won´t work... or gave unknown errors!

The Microsoft free Word viewer undestands a Word password
(just tried it). I got pretty good results copying and pasting from
the free viewer into Wordpad.
