REQ: Using GHOST in W98 & WXP?

W

wee

My friend extracted Norton Ghost, wanting to do backups from floppy
disk, using Ghost. He has two machines, one W98SE, the other WXP
PRO.

He made a startup floppy on the W98SE machine and loaded the above
Ghost files onto it. He then was able to boot up to that floppy and
execute Ghost to do a backup of his c drive. Worked just fine. Fast,
too.

He tells me these are the files he has for Ghost on the floppy.

IO.SYS
MSDOS.SYS
COMMAND.COM
MOUSE.INI
MOUSE.COM
IBMBIO.COM
IBMDOS.COM
<DIR> GHOST
GHOST.EXE
GHOSTERR.TXT

Now then, he wants to do the same on his WXP machine - i.e. do a
backup from floppy. When he boots up to that same floppy in the WXP
machine, it boots fine, but since the floppy is FAT, c drive is not
recognized because it is NTFS.

Certainly Ghost works in XP? Can someone tell him (and me for that
matter) if he can do what he wants to do? How can he do a Ghost
backup from floppy on a WXP machine?

Thank You

Older versions of Ghost are only Fat32. You need one of the later (post
2002 or so) versions that work with NTFS. I believe the latest version
works directly from the GUI in XP/XP Pro.

Hi,
its very simple once you know how. All you need have is same drive partition
or a second drive or partition that you plan to back up to formatted to
Fat32. When you boot with the disk you do everything the same as when using
it with Win98SE. The only thing I can think of that might throw you off is
when your using Ghost and your asked where to back up to it shows the
partition or drive you formatted as Fat32 as C drive. Keep in mind NTFS
drives and partitions are not recognized in DOS that's why the Fat32
partition or drive is recognized as the C drive and will be the only drive
or partition shown. Hope I explained this well enough. Another thought is
to keep in mind XP can only format drives Fat32 up to 32GB. If you need or
want a larger drive or partition you can format it with Win98SE up to 62GB.
Microsoft offers a fix to Win98 for Fdisk for drives larger than 62GB. Keep
in mind you can always use the drive's manufacturer tools for formatting,
ETC. I like Western Digital myself and find they have some really good tools
for their drives. Disclaimer: I only use Western Digital drives by choice I
have no connection to the company.
