REQ: Purchasing decison

Wad

My present system:

Epox 8rda+
Athlon XP 2200
1 GB 3200 Samsung Ram
80 GB Maxtor HD
CD & DVD writer
Radeon 9700 Pro
Enermax 400W PS

Problem:

Bad Caps on mainboard so I need to replace!

Solution: Upgrade only CPU and mainboard

Athlon 64 3000 Venice $180

Abit AV8 $105 or,
Asus A8V deluxe $125 or,
Giga-byte K8NS - Ultra 939 $ 105 or
MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum $ 125

I am in Korea and my choice of maniboards is limited to the above.

See any problems here? Will the MSI (Nforce 3 Ultra) be a better
performer than the Abit (K8T800Pro)? The bottom line is a small
upgrade at the best bang for the buck. I also want to run Windows XP
64.

Thanks

The performance of the MSI K8N Neo2 is very good however there is a
problem with the MSI K8N Neo4 where it can only see 3.5G of memory, don't
know if the Neo2 has the same issue.

Wad:
I am running the Abit AV8 with an AMD64 3000 Winchester,
with 2x512meg RAM. No problems, happy.

FWIW, I too had to upgrade from an Epox board with bad caps.
The above is what I settled on.

I'm running pretty much the same setup, the Abit AV8 AMD
Athlon 64 3000+ Winchester, but with only 2 sticks of PNY PC2700
(Samsung), that I transferred over from my old P4 system, running in
dual channel mode without any complaints. I'm even using the
integrated sound with the digital output to my home theater system.
I'm running Windows 2000 with SP4, and it runs pretty much 24/7, and
I've had no unusual reboots, or BSOD. I don't overclock though, so
YMMV.
