Replicate AD to remote server?

A

Hi, we have 2 DC's (2003) on our network, but as a
redundancy procedure, we were wondering if we could
install a server in one our our remote sites (slow link -
2mb lease) which AD replicates to maybe one a day, so in
the event of a disaster we would still have this server
with AD on it.

What is the best way to do this?

Firstly, if you haven't done already, configure the approriate sites and subnets and associate the two.

At the remote site, point the remote DCs DNS at that of the main site and run DCPROMO.

Once replication is complete, configure the NTDS replication settings so that replication only occurs when you want it to. You'll also have to configure a replication schedule for the SYSVOL replication, which can be found under System\File Replication Service\Dmain System Volume (SYSVOL Share) in Active Directory Users and Computers.

Also, reconfigure the DNS client so that it no longer points accross the WAN (generally, you'll point at yourself).

Bear in mind, certain events, such as a password reset, cause instant replication triggers to the PDC. If there are users at this site, it will ease your WAN link by making this machine an Active Directory Integrated DNS server and Global Catalogue Server as well.
