Replacing Motherboard in XP Pro box

Kurc Buzdegan

Just replacing a motherboard in a system that has recently
been upgraded from Win98 to XP Pro. After installation of
motherboard system is not booting properly. Starts to
load drivers(?) reboots and gives option to start in
protected mode and even this results in reboot loop.

New motherboard is ASUS P4S533-MX. Previous motherboard
had imbedded IDE controller as the new one, but different
chip set controller. Am not adverse to a fresh install,
but is this allowed with the license of XP Pro? Want to
replace the hard drive as well (for a faster bigger one)
and if I can will do it at the same time. Should have
done this prior to installing XP I know. Can this be done
at this time?

thanks

Greetings --

Normally, and assuming either a retail license or a generic
(non-branded) OEM license, unless the new motherboard is virtually
identical to the old one (same chipset, same IDE controllers, same
BIOS version, etc.), you'll need to perform a repair (a.k.a. in-place
upgrade) installation, at the very least:

How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade of Windows XP

As always when undertaking such a significant change, back up any
important data before starting.

This may also require re-activation. If it's been more than 120
days since you last activated that specific Product Key, you'll most
likely be able to activate via the internet without problem. If it's
been less, you might have to make a 5 minute phone call.
