Replacing monitor on Insipron 9300

My monitor is a 17 inch UltraSharp Wide Screen XGA+ Display. A few
months ago vertical line running from top to bottom appeared about a
half inch from the left edge. It wasn't too annoying, but a week or
two ago another one came in about 3 inches from the right. Now I have
another one about 3 inches from the left.

Instead of getting the same kind of display, I was wondering if I
could replace it with a better quality one without changing the video
output. Can someone recommend a good replacement?

OK, we need to know the exact resolution you are running at to answer that
question. XGA+ is not a widescreen aspect ratio resolution. WXGA+ is 1440
X 900.

Assuming 1440 X 900:

or

Both are excellent monitors, slightly larger than what you had. They have
the same native resolution, assuming your current monitor is WXGA+. -Dave

I was planning on replacing the monitor in the laptop. The ones you
listed are external. I am hoping that there is some kind of standard
and getting a replacement will not be too hard.

I am running at 1400x900. This is where I was getting my info about
the monitor.

Replacing a laptop screen is a very delicate and tough procedure even for
the most diligent persons. Check around the various sites for the info with
a Google search.

Then you're looking for a replacement "panel" for Inspiron 9300.
Some notebooks have several options during manufacturing, for
what panel is installed, so there may be more than one replacement
part number listed. For example, Wikipedia lists "available in WXGA+
with a 1440 by 900 resolution and WUXGA with a 1920 by 1200 resolution",
so there would be more than one replacement part around.

Judging by this thread, you're not alone.

This site offers some contact information, without noting whether
Dell will help. You never know, there could be a hidden warranty
(or an insulting "$50 off on your next Dell purchase"). But you
won't know until you contact Dell, as to how they'll respond.

I expect Dell probably used the lawyers, to reduce that site to
its current sad state.

You can read an early archived copy of that site here.

Lots of nice info
Thanks

My powers of persuasion are not as good as some of the people in the
forum.

The best I could do was they offered to fix it for 300 bucks.

You should have an output for an external monitor. Use that if you have an
extra monitor around until you can save for a new notebook. You don't have
to add much to that $300 to get a decent laptop. I think you would find that
trying it yourself will be at least that much in frustration......although a
few folks have done it. Completely disassembling a notebook, adding a panel
and getting it back to working order is a crap shoot to say the least.
