replacing dll file to remove a virus

Hello Everyone,

I've in herited an old Hewlett Packard running win98.
I did an online scan with norton and it tells me I have
the adware.setup.b virus. it's located in C:\windows\system\AANTX.dll
Would it be safe to delete the AANTX.dll file and replace it with one
from the win98 cd?

From what i can tell AANTX.dll is not a required part of windows 98. But
googling also suggests that you may need some removal tools.

Yes.

and replace it with one
from the win98 cd?

It's not a legit file.

Run AdAware and Spybot as well. And I suggest also doing a scan with
KASFX (see my web site).

If you inherited a used computer the best thing tou can do is wipes all data and reinstall
an OS of choice on it from scratch.

This way you mitigate any infectors and installation bugs that may exist.

Otherwise, ....


For non-viral malware...

Please download, install and update the following software...

* Ad-aware SE v1.06
http://www.lavasoft.de/
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

* SpyBot Search and Destroy v1.4
http://security.kolla.de/

After the software is updated, I suggest scanning the system in Safe Mode.

I also suggest downloading, installing and updating BHODemon for any Browser Helper Objects
that may be on the PC.

To use this utility, perform the following...
Execute; Multi_AV.exe { Note: You must use the default folder C:\AV-CLS }
Choose; Unzip
Choose; Close

Execute; C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT
{ or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS }

NOTE: You may have to disable your software FireWall or allow WGET.EXE to go through your
FireWall to allow it to download the needed AV vendor related files.

C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT -- { or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS}
This will bring up the initial menu of choices and should be executed in Normal Mode.
This way all the components can be downloaded from each AV vendor's web site.
The choices are; Sophos, Trend, McAfee, Kaspersky, Exit this menu and Reboot the PC.

You can choose to go to each menu item and just download the needed files or you can
download the files and perform a scan in Normal Mode. Once you have downloaded the files
needed for each scanner you want to use, you should reboot the PC into Safe Mode [F8 key
during boot] and re-run the menu again and choose which scanner you want to run in Safe
Mode. It is suggested to run the scanners in both Safe Mode and Normal Mode.

When the menu is displayed hitting 'H' or 'h' will bring up a more comprehensive PDF help

I downloaded and ran Trend Micro Housecalls. It found and removed the
following adware/spyware.
ADW_SE.41299
ADW_SE.16596
ADW_SE.67466
ADW_SE.18863
ADW_SE.7744
TRAK_SE.68189
ADW_SE.69994
ADW_SUPERLOGY.A
I also downloaded spybot 1.4 and it found and removed
SUPERLOGY.COM
Then I noticed the file AANTX.dll was not in the windows\system folder
anymore. I scanned my computer from norton's web site again and it
said I had the adware.getup.b virus in my norton protected recycle
bin, in the file 00002615.dll. I emptied that recycle bin and
rebooted. I'm presently rerunning the housecalls program and I'll
follow that up with spybot, grisoft's AVG, and norton again.

Previously before all this, I would get a little window next to the
start button that said HELLO at the end of a bootup. Also internet
explorer would hang for 45 seconds to a minute when it was first
opened and would lock up any old time when being used.

All that is GONE!!!! Now it boots up fine, no oddball messages and IE
opens without hanging at all. Housecalls and spybot cleaned it up
beautifully!!

Obviously, I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer as far as pc's are
concerned. You guys are wonderful!! I appreciate all your responses
and I'm saving them all for potential problems in the future.

I suggest running ther Kaspersky module in the Multi AV scanning tool.
