Replacing a 9700 with an x850

Hi,

Am I asking for trouble if I replace my current Radeon 9700 with an
x850? Can I just uninstall the drivers, switch cards, and install the
(same) Catalyst drivers again? Or will I need a clean reinstall of
windows?

Advice appreciated. The motherboard's an Asus A8V

cheers,

Z

No, you won't need to re-install Windows, your plan sounds just fine!

When you say "the same drivers", that's fine, but this is a great
opportunity to upgrade to the latest Catalyst release if that isn't what
you have already.

why would you want to install the same driver, if you get the new card and
new cd driver, you should install that new one in. you don't want to go back
to stone age do you?

I'm using the latest Catalyst at the moment.

If you have any troubles, download the ATI catalyst removal tool
(exact name?)that will remove any previous ATI sofware on your system.

The tool can be found on the ATI site.

Remove the instances of the 9700 from your device manager, in case
you weren't saying that in your post. .

Absolutely no need to reload windows, clean.

Good Luck

That will work fine, has for me every time. Keep in mind that the
people that preach "re-install windows" at every opportunity are most
likely:

A) anti-windows people trying to slander MS.
B) noobs that really don't know how to operate their computer.

With Windows XP, I've upgraded mainboards twice, videocard once, and
switched to a Raid0 array, back to a single drive, and back to Raid0
(due to one of the mainboard upgrades), and NEVER had to re-install
windows (sysprep, , reseal and norton ghost 2003).

Nobody here has suggested he re-install Windows! In fact, I have seldom
seen such bland suggestions here, most of the posters are beyond that
level if you hadn't noticed.

The only thing I'd do besides the straight Catalyst install is review
the AGP driver and possibly the BIOS settings for AGP in-line with the
new card. Maybe not even that.
