Replace XP with 2000....

Guest

I have XP on my computer and want to replace it with the
2000 software I have. The computer won't let me run the
2000 installation program because it says it is outdated.
Any help????

Greetings --

There is no "rollback" to Win2K.

To replace WinXP with an earlier OS, you'll have to boot from the
appropriate boot disk, format the hard drive, and install. There is
no supported downgrade path or technique.

Simply boot from the Win2K installation CD. You'll be offered the
opportunity to delete, create, and/or format the system partition as
part of the installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the
order of boot devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)

Good move!

Yes, it's unfortunate they put that limitation in the setup program. As
Bruce says below, the only option is to start form scratch.

Limitation? Please name any other operating system that allows
one to downgrade to an older version.

I don't know; can you run Windows 98 setup from with Windown ME? Can you
run Windows 95 setup from within Windows 98? Can you run Windows NT
setup from within Windows 2000?

In most cases you would not want to revert to an earlier O/S. In the
case of XP it's a common request (with good reason), especially on a big
corporate network. The XP setup program has everything needed to run
WinNT32, create a new boot partition (boot means "system" in Microsoft
language) and allow installation of Windows 2000. The system disk
(startup disk) would still have the XP loader, but that's all; you can
dual boot and with today's hard drive sizes, everyone is happy.
