Replace toner, drum, or printer? (Brother HL-1240)

I

Ian Pilcher

My trusty Brother HL-1240 is finally starting to show its age. It's
still on the original toner cartridge, with no sign of running out, but
there's now a light coat of toner over the entire page -- as if every
page had a light gray background.

So should I replace

- the toner cartridge (relatively inexpensive),

- the drum (about $20 less than a new printer), or

- the entire printer?

Opinions?

Thanks!

A drum kit is only $20 less than a new printer?

What the _hell_ are these manufacturers thinking ?

Yup. It is that way for a Brother printer. Your printer needs a new drum so go
check out teh price of a new drum and then check out the new low end HP
Laserjet printer, 1010 (or 1012) at OfficeMax this week. It is $147. No rebate
is required.

My two cents.

I think a toner cartridge would fix it, I have the same, it did the
same and I replaced the cartridge. Fixed

I dunno about your model, but the MFC model I have came with toner
cartridge yield about 3000 pages. I already refilled it twice and just
order 2-pack of 6000 pages toner kits for $17 + S/H (or around $10 each).

So I guess your may runs low of toner, and you can buy toner kit (you can
get them pretty cheap on eBay) and fill it yourself to save some buck. It
isn't hard as you just remove the plug, use Shop-Vac to vaccum all the older
toner out (I also use air compressor to clean it real good), replace with
newer toner and you are all set for 3000-6000 pages depending on the amount
of toner you put in.

Picked up a Samsung ML-1710 for $99 (post-rebate) at Fry's.

That's about $50 less than a new drum for the Brother HL-1240, for those
keeping track. Plus it prints at 600 dpi under Linux. (The Brother did
600 dpi under Windows, but only 300 dpi in PCL mode.)

Now the question is how to dispose of the old one.

Hi,

I`ve got silimilar problem with HL1030 and 1230), but....
All the pages that were going out were "dirty" (grey) so...I changed the
drum...
...and nothing has changed....
I`ve got 5 toner cartridges and I suppose that it is the cause of the
problems.
After replacing the toner, the pages are still grey but not the same for
each toner.
Toner cartridges are almost new, one of them leaves light grey background on
the paper
and the other one almost black...

I need help :) ...I bought 2 drums and my boss is going to kill
me if I would not manage to fix our printers...

Thanks in advance

P.S. Please excuse me my english...

Just take a closer look and clean all the spilled toner inside the printer
and on the drum, cartridge etc.
