replace desktop icons with my own image

I wonder if any of you have found a way to add your own image as a
replecement to the standard ones that appear as my desktop shortcuts. For
instance, I have Google Maps as a shortcut, and I would like to add the
Google Maps Logo instead of the blurry image of a "G" that I now have. O.K.,
I'm an aesthetics freak. :) Any suggestions?

You can change the icon for any true shortcut. Right click the shortcut and select Properties/Change Icon button. Browse to the icon file that you want to use.

There are, literally, thousands of free, custom icons available on the internet. Search for "free icons" using Google.

Place your custom icons in a separate icons folder to keep them permanent.

Use a free program like FavOrg to retrieve custom icons that you see on websites like Google.

Scroll down to Line 108, right side. Click the "FavOrg-Restore and Save Favorite Icons" link to download the program. Unzip the file and run the Setup.exe to install. Read the Help file for instructions.

Click the right mouse button and select properties. Now click the Shortcut tab if it's for a program or the Web Document tab if
it's for a website. Click the Change Icon button. Finally select whatever icon you want with the file selection dialog box and
click Ok, Ok.

There are many icons in "C:\windows\system32\shell32.dll". They are the
system icons.

They didn't say anything about system icons, they are trying to change the icon for shortcuts (probably web site shortcuts.)
