Repair Installation XP Pro

Bill Peterson

I'm trying to do a repair installation on a used IBM 390X laptop with
Windows XP Pro. I've gotten as far as the step to enter the product key. I
keep getting the message that my key is invalid. The key on the computer tag
is for Windows 2000 not XP. Is there anyway to recover the XP Key? If not is
there a way to get out of the repair process and go back to the way it was
before I started? The computer just keeps going to the set-up screen every
time I reboot.

Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

You probably have gone too far into the reinstall to be able to revert
back to the original so there is no way to recover the original
product key from the actual installation data.

If the machine original came with Windows 2000 then it must have been
upgraded to Windows XP at some point, and the Product Key should be on
the cardboard folder that the Windows XP Upgrade CD came in.
