Renaming styles in a template

I'm planning to rename some styles in a template which is used in many
documents by now. However I'm afraid that if I update the styles in the
documents based on the template, the styles won't be renamed but new styles
with new names will appear, and the formatting of the documents will be the
same as before too. Is there a way to rename the styles in the global
template without having these problems?

Thanks in advance.

Your assumption is correct: You have to rename the style for each of the
documents too.

Note that if the "new" style has already been added to the document, you can
use Find and Replace to apply it to text. Then you could delete the original
style.
