You cannot rename a Windows 2000 Active Directory domain directly.
You can create a new domain on another machine, then use ADMT to migrate the
accounts to the new domain.
-or-
If still in mixed mode, you can add an NT4 BDC to the domain, remove it from
the network, promote it to a PDC, then upgrade it to Win2k choosing a new
domain name DCPromo in the process.

Kevin,

Thank you for your response it has been very helpful. We are also discussing
upgrading to Server 2003 active directory would the process be similar in
that case?

Under Win2k3, you do have the option of renaming your domain. It is not
easy, or quick, but it can be done.

To be honest, the easiest way is to build a new domain on another machine,
then use ADMT to migrate everything to the new domain.

The only problem with this solution is, you have to use a different NetBIOS
domain name because you have to create trust between the domains, which you
can't do if they have the same NetBIOS domain name. It is not a big deal,
but if users are used to browsing in Network Places the new domain name may
cause some confusion.

Can I ask what the problem is with your current domain name?

kevin,

The issue is that the individual that setup our domain, named it with .com
and it has been causing DNS issues externally the email address it
tka-architects.com and the internal domain is tka.com.

we feel it would resolve our issue if we removed the .com from our internal
setup?

If you remove the 'com' from your current tka.com zone, it will then be
"TKA". That is a single label name, and will cause problems. Your setup is
fine. I cannot see how it is causing problems with email, as long as
Exchange 2003 is configured properly. As long as the recipient policy is set
to make the machine authorative to receive mail for tka-arhitects.com, and
that is set as the default address, and the email addresses show that under
all user accounts, then you should be good to go.

Otherwise, maybe we can help better if you can accurately describe what
problems you are experiencing with email?
