Boot from a DOS diskette and run fdisk to delete the existing partition
(presumably NTFS), then create a new FAT32 partition. Then format the
partition and install WIndows 98.

Mike,

Go to http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm and download the boot disk for
Windows 98 SE. Change your BIOS setting to floppy disk as first boot, boot
from floppy and when the DOS screen has finished loading At the A/> promt,
type fdisk and follow the prompts to remove the partition (if the partition
is NTFS then choose to 'Delete Non-DOS Partition' [without the quotes]).

You will then have to reboot the computer with the bootdisk still in the
drive, partition and format the hard drive and then install Windows 98.

Hope this is of some help

The command is simply fdisk, run from the A: prompt. But you have to make
sure that fdisk is on the diskette you booted from.

Mike,

I missed the USB bit of your post - I'll have to get my specs changed, or a
monitor bigger than the 19 inch one that I'm using :)

It's possible that your motherboard does not support USB drives without the
operating system loading first - hence the reason why it won't load the
floppy disk.

I see from your post that you have booted from DOS, how did you get on with
the FDISK and install?

The W98 2nd edition CD that I had many moons ago was not only bootable
but was overly eager to remove an unreadable partition and then reformat
as FAT16 or FAT32. In fact it absolutely insisted on removing an
unreadable C: drive (NTFS would be unreadable to W98) or it wouldn't
install without tricks. I never used 'se' as I heard it wasn't very
good, I am surprised it recognizes the remains of an XP install. This
isn't an upgrade disk or proprietary OEM disk of some sort is it?

Try replacing the hard disks' MBR. From a dos boot disk that contains an
fdisk.exe file command:

fdisk /mbr

This will place DOS MBR code on the primary master's hard drive (C:
drive). If you removed XP from the drive maybe XP's MBR code (it is
slightly different than DOS's MBR code) is tripping up the SE installer.
Its easy enough to try at least.

But if its of no help see here for fdisk commands to create new
partitions and to format them from DOS ...

http://www.pcguide.com/proc/setup/hdd-c.html

DOS boot disks are here ...

http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm

You can of course use your XP CD to remove the existing partition(s) on
the drive, create new ones and even format them. Just start a new XP
install and select to *not* use the existing install *or* the existing
partition(s). XP will offer to remove the old partition(s), create new
ones and even format them. Obviously you would want to select FAT32 and
not NTFS if you format from here. As soon as formatting is complete
eject the CD or shut off the comp so the XP install can't proceed. You
may have to fdisk the MBR in DOS as I don't know at what point the XP
installer puts its MBR code in place.

Mike,

For FDISK it should look like this - A:\>fdisk (the letters are not case
sensitive).

For FORMAT it will be - A:\>format C: (there is a space between format and
C:)

=========================================
Mike,

There's obviously something going a little wrong there somewhere. Because
of this, I have enclosed some step-by-step instructions below on how to
delete a
single partition on a hard disk drive. Forgive me if it is a little basic,
but I find that's sometimes the best way to sort out a problem when I get
'bogged down'.

If you more problems and if you are running Microsoft Word, then supply me
with a valid Hotmail or Yahoo address and I will e-mail you some detailed
information - it won't open in WordPad because of the formatting.

Brian G

===========================================

- Turn your computer off and put the floppy disk into the computer.

- Start the computer and it should then boot from the floppy and
eventually bring up a menu - choose Start Computer without CD ROM support
and press enter.

- You will then get the A:\> prompt which should look exactly like --
A:\>

- At this prompt type fdisk in front of the > sign (do not alter the
prompt in any way) - and you should then have this - A:\>fdisk - and press
enter.

- After pressing enter, you will reach a dialogue screen that will have
this at the bottom - Do you wish to enable large disk support? Type in Y at
the relevant bit and press enter.

- You will then reach the FDISK options menu - select Delete Partition
or Logical Dos Drive and press enter.

- At the Delete Partition or Logical Dos Drive menu - select Delete
Non-Dos Partition and press enter.

- At the next Delete Primary DOS Partition - If your primary partition
looks like C:1 - then type 1 in the relevant place and press enter (if it’s
a different number, type that one instead).

- The next ‘box’ will ask you to Enter Volume Label (name of the hard
disk). If it doesn’t have a name just press enter. If it has a name,
obviously type this in..

- Type Y in the next ‘box’ that appears to confirm that you really want
to delete the partition and press enter.

- Once this is done, just follow the prompts that show and when you
again reach the A:\> prompt - reboot the computer to begin to rebuild the
disk partition(s).
