These folders are for your windows updates and system update installations. you can remove them however you will impair your ability of removing the changes made by the update.

.

Note that this folders contain the uninstall information
of all the updates of your windows. If you absolutlly
sure that you will never need to uninstall this updates,
you can delete it.
But I recommend that you should arcive this folder to save
space so you could use this uninstall information later.

Those are there so you could *uninstall* the patches from Windows
Update. Each is a folder of files needed for the purpose -
Windows\$NTUninstallQnnnnnn$ for the fix described at
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;nnnnnn

If you decide you will not want to uninstall a fix (and if all is
running smoothly you probably won't) then delete the folder. If you
then try in Add/remove, to Remove that one (Windows Hotfix Qnnnnnn or
KBnnnnnn), it will fail, and you will be offered the option of removing
the entry there

hi alex,

i never paid attention to the amount of space these files were taking up
until i read this thread.
if i burned them to a cd and then deleted them from my hard drive, if i
needed to put the patches back on or uninstall them, could i copy them from
the cd back to my hard drive and have them work properly?

thank you.

What you can do if you have a CD burner is burn the complete folder to
a CD, then run regedit.exe and at

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup

Change the value of ServicePackSourcePath in the right pane to reflect
the drive. Best if you have 2 drives, and can have the original
SourcePath on one and this on the other

hi alex,

when you say to burn the complete folder, do you mean the entire c:\winnt
folder or just the $NtUninB#$ folders?

thank you.

hi alex,

i copied the files to a cd.
i haven't changed the registry entry yet, but i will shortly.

what i'd like to know is should i delete the files from the c:\winnt folder
manually, or is there another way they folders should be removed?

thank you.
