Removing Start Menu Item

B

Bill Law

I have an item on my Start Menu called "Dell Support
Center" that is located directly above the
LogOff/Shutdown buttons that I would like to remove. I
cannot find out where to go to remove it. I've already
gone through the right-click, properties, start menu,
customize, Advanced tab and have gone through the list of
items found in the Start menu, but it's still there.
I've unchecked all items in this list, and it's still
there. Anyone know how I can remove this item from my
start menu?
Thanks, Bill

Hi Bill,

From previous newsgroup posts:

Open Registry Editor [Regedit.exe] and navigate to this location:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\StartMenu\StartPanel\ShowOEMLink]
In the right-pane, change the value for NoOEMLinkInstalled to 0. Close Registry Editor and restart Windows.
The Manufacturer Link entry should now appear in the 'Start Menu Items' dialog. Uncheck it.

o Right-click the New Start Menu and choose Properties
o Click Start Menu tab, 'Customize', 'Advanced' tab
o In the 'Start Menu items' list, uncheck Manufacturer Link option
o Click OK, and OK.

This hides the OEM Link from Start Menu.

It is NOT listed on the Add/Remove list of installed
items, nor is any items that refer to Dell. This hard
drive I'm using was originally installed in a Dell pc and
was moved over to this pc that I built, and has since
been through all of the Windows Operating systems
beginning with Windows95, then 98, 98SE and has been
upgraded up to the current WindowsXP Pro that I'm running
now. Since there are no other Dell apps installed, I
just wanted to remove it from the Start menu, but alas,
it ain't happenin'! The couple of files that start from
this icon are still on my hard drive.

Thanks though for the help.

Hi Bill,

In addition, you can replace that space with a link or folder of your
preference.

Add a Folder or Link Under the Run Command (Line 180)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Note: If you running an OEM, it will replace their link.

Added info:

Add a Folder to My Computer and Desktop (Line 130)
Add a Folder to the Start Button - Right Click (Line 124)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

You can replace either My Pictures or My Music with a specialized folder of
your choice. It will behave as the above folders do as in cascading, etc.

Add Folder to Start Menu - Replace MP or MM (Line 2)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
