Removing qttask.exe and XP...I give up

I'm using a computer running XP Home SP2. I also have QuickTime 6.5.2
installed and use it occasionally to view multimedia content.

Like many people, I'm annoyed that QuickTime inserts a program called
qttask.exe in the MSCONFIG lineup. I did a lot of searching on Google and
found several suggestions as to how to get rid of it. Most of those ideas
WILL remove qttask.exe.....but only temporarily on my PC. I've tinkered
with the registry, installed programs that supposedly prevent those files
from loading, but to no avail.

Every single instance I watch a QuickTime movie, "C:\Program
Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime finds its way back into my MSCONFIG
lineup.

As far as I can tell, if you want to use QuickTime, that listing will
have to stay in MSCONFIG.

Open QuickTime.
Click Edit, point to Preferences, and then click QuickTime Preferences.
Now use the dropdown box to adjust Preferences.
You need to disable (usually uncheck) all boxes related to Auto Updates,
Tray Icon, other Automatic features, etc.
Close the window when you are done.
Close QuickTime.

Clean Windows Startup:

Restart computer.

Hope this helps!

I'm very fed up with the Quicktime startup item too.

I have StartupCPL and after running Quicktime i always find a Quicktime item
in the start-up items.
Easy to delete but there should be a way to disable Quicktime from
automatically putting itself in the system start-up.

I just opened Quicktime player and checked it's Preferences - all the
relevant options are unchecked/disabled.
Closed Quicktime and opened StartupCPl and - you guessed it - there's
another Quicktime item for me to delete.

Can i use GPEDIT.MSC to stop the QTTASK.EXE from being executed?

Martin.

Google search on "Quicktime Alternative", first hit, looks good at a glance:

It's easy to stop it: kill the qttask.exe process with the TaskMgr,
and then rename qttask.exe to something else so it can't be found
(and therefore run) at startup. That's all I did. Same tip works
great for any other annoying apps that run at startup too (such as
msmsgs.exe).

I finally solved this problem. I simply used Windows Search to locate
the qttask file and then deleted it. QuickTime files still play fine, and
qttask no longer re-appears in my msconfig lineup. Sometimes the simplest
solutions work best.
