Removing orphaned W2K and NT 4.0 DCs

Russ

Hi all

Today I saw that the XP computers were taking a while to log in.
After looking at the DCs in my Domain Controller OU, I noticed there
are quite a few old DCs that are no longer in production (both NT and
W2K DCs).

I found a post from another subscriber (see below). Is this still
valid?

Please follow the procedure below to remove the NT4 accounts
permanently.
You will need to install the Support Tools from the Windows 2000 CD if
you
haven't already done so. Make sure you are logged on with an account
with
Domain Admin rights.

1. Do a Start, Run and type adsiedit.msc at your DC. Expand "Domain
NC[<domain>], expand
"DC=<domain>,DC=com, and then expand "OU=Domain Controllers".

2. Right-click the orphaned DC, and then click Properties.

3. In the Select which properties the view box, click Both.

4. In the Select a property to view box, click userAccountControl.

5. Click Clear.

6. In the Edit Attribute box, type "4096" (without the quotation
marks).

7. Click Set, click Apply, click OK, and then quit ADSI Edit.

8. Start Active Directory Users and Computers, and then delete the
orphaned DC from the Domain Controllers OU.

Don't forget to clean up in Sites and Services, DNS and WINS. I would also
use NTDSUTIL and do a metadata cleanup just in case.
