Removing internet access

B

Bruce Roberts

I have some windows 2000 pro computers in a classroom that I need to disable
internet access. I need to keep the network connection. I tried renaming
the internet explorer excutable, but it just recreated it. I don't see
anything in group policy that will disable internet explorer (only remove
the icon from the desktop). Any ideas or suggestions?

Hello Bruce,

You may want to try some software called Browse Control. It allows
you to turn the internet on and off, specify only certain websites
that students can access and schedule this. You can also pull
applications onto a BLOCK list and precent them from being run.

BC has been specifically designed to keep teachers and end-users in
mind so you don't have to worry about complicated port-blocking and
network properties as this provides a quick solution.

You can download it from: http://www.browsecontrol.com

Hope this helps,

What's to stop users from simply editing the original filename (with a
hex editor) and thus bypass application blocking?

Jim.

Just get net nanny its VERY simple to use and you can define times you want
to block the internet access or block it 24/7. I use this for my kids at
home and it works extremely well(much to their annoyance!)

A simple "How do I bypass net nanny?" on Ask Jeeves will give them the
temporary (to keep you in the dark) or permanent solution.

Hi Jim,

You're right and you can use a hex editor to get around this
application blocking. However the software is mainly used in
classroom settings and even when companies have bought the software,
they have not had to even deal with this. I speak to many different
IT people on a daily basis and not one of them has brought this to my
attention. You were the first actually, so thank you for that! Most
people aren't actually aware that you can modify it this way
:)

There are ways to prevent the EXE modification too though, by using
Windows' Server settings and making all EXEs read only... though im
sure you know a way around that too...

Thanks for your feedback though.

Cheers,
