removing folder from hard drive

Luis E

After I uninstalled Norton SystemWorks I learned that their uninstalled left
behind a folder called NPROTECT. There is a folder in each hard drive in my
computer. This folder is part of the Protected Recycle Bin.

In my C drive this folder occupies over 5 GB and has over 10,000 entries. I
would like to remove this directory, but I can not remove the entries. The
entries are pointers to files that no longer exist. These are location of
files that were sent to the Recycle Bin and NSW keeps track after the Bin is
emptied in case the user wants to un-delete the file.

Any assistance will be welcome, including suggesting products that would
perform this task.
I have used all the DOS commands that I know and I have been unsucessful in
removing these entries. I need to delete them so that I can reclaim 5 GB of
space without resorting to a reformat procedure.

Hi Luis,

Take ownership of the folder

A tech support specialist and I use that program a couple of times and it
did not remove the folder.

A solution might be available if you would post the answer to the
obvious question:

What happens when you try to remove (or delete) the entries?

The system says I lack security, but I have remove the check mark of all the
entries (read only, and hidden) I also gave myself full control privelage to
all sub-folders and entries within the NPROTECT folder. There are no files
in this directory, only entries to files in the C: drive.

Actually I think that if those entries could be easily removed, the tech
support staff at Norton would have been able to assist me with this problem.
The Norton Removal Tool the used should have deleted this folder, but since
it is normally hidden, this was obviously missed. Maybe the next version of
their utility may perform this task.

Does the message really say - you "lack security" or does it say
something along these lines:

Cannot delete folder. It is being used by another person or program.
Cannot delete file Access is denied
There has been a sharing violation.
The source or destination file may be in use.
The file is in use by another program or user.
Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is
not currently in use.

Specifically when deleting the folder the response message is:

Can not delete 00000000: Can not find specified file. Make sure you
specify correct path and file name.

When I try to delete an entry; for example 00000015:

Can not delete file: Can not read from file the source file or disk.

REMEMBER: These are pointers to the location of files on a disk which were
moved to the Recycle Bin and the Bin was emptied a long time ago.
