Remove Start Menu Programs Group

G

Gavin F

Hi

I'm looking for help on removing the "programs" item on
the classic start menu.

Its for a customized locked down desktop that provides
access to applications from its own starting point on the
start menu. No access to normal XP programs is required.

I've set the GPO to remove common programs from the start
menu, and also tried to delete the programs folder from
the users profile and default user profile ... but the
entry still persists in the start menu

Any ideas?

TIA,

Gav

Thanks for the info Wes, still have the problem though.
The simple start menu seems to be much easier to customize
than the classic one - which i'm using :(

I have stumbled on the solution. Many people have posted about editing the registry on the local machine. Surely this misses the point. This is about editing a GPO to be applied to all users in a group to prevent access to anything other than what you want to allow no matter which machine they log onto. (Editing the local registry involves knowing which machine they will use!) Assuming you are using Server 2003 as the DC then edit the GPO and go to:

User configuration/administrative templates/start menu and task bar and disable the "force classic start menu". Nearly all the other settings in this location are enabled too.

I was setting up a GPO for AS language students in school and all they see now is my computer and printers and faxes. Other policies are applied which mean that nothing appears in my computer and nothing appears in printers (there are no printers installed). All my policy allows them to do is go to a moodle page which plays a series of exam sound files using the built in flash player. They cannot slow the playback down. It took me the best part of three days playing with group policy to achieve this so it is not a five minute job!
