Remove From Open With List

Steven

To All:

I would like to remove unnecessary applications from the "Open With" list
for various file extensions.

The method explained in

Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 258860
How to Remove Programs from the "Open With" List

-----

The programs on the Open With list for each file type are independent of
that file's registered program(s). To remove items from this list, locate
the following registry key

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Explorer\FileExts\.extension\OpenWithList
NOTE: The above registry key is one path, it has been wrapped for
readability.

where extension is the file extension for the file type whose Open With list
you want to modify. Delete the value in this key that represents the program
to be removed from the Open With list.

-----

does NOT work on my home PC running WinXP. This method has been successful
for several years in my work PC's running Win2000.

A search of the MSKB did not come up with anything for WinXP.

How do I edit the Registry to remove the accumulated unnecessary
applications in the "Open With" list for various file extensions in WinXP?

Thank you,

Steve

Interesting, but seemingly unnecessarily convoluted.

In XP set a system restore point, just in case.
You tried opening Windows Explorer, clicking on Tools, Folder Options, File
Types, and then highlighting an undesired entry and then clicking the Delete
button? You can click the Change button to assign a different association if
you want to open the filetype with something other than what it is currently
set to.

WizeGuy:

Thank you for your RE but you completely missed my question and provided the
wrong answer!

I am NOT interested in removing File Types and their associations under
Folder Options.

I am interested in the removing the accumulated applications in the "Open
With" list in the right click menu for certain file types.

Unfortunately the method outlined in the MSKB Article 258860 which I have
used for several years in Win2000 which requires editing

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExt
s\.extension\OpenWithList

does not work for WinXP.

Hopefully this is less convoluted for you.

Thank you,

Steve

WinGuy,

But that will delete ALL associations for a particular extention! That's not
what the OP wanted.

Steve,

If you follow the steps for "Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 258860", it
*will* work. If it doesn't then I would suggest making sure you have all MS
updates installed. Tested on WinXP_Pro SP1.

Kelly:

Thanks for the RE:

I originally tried Doug Knox's OpenWithClear utility and it has a BIG
problem which he REALLY needs to fix. It does clear out the list of non-MS
apps in the "Open With" list and then ADDS BACK the MS apps, includung some
that are NOT on my PC!

For example, I never use Notepad, Wordpad or Word to edit text files, but
Doug Knox's OpenWithClear utility puts them on the "Open With" list.

Thanks again,

Steve

Kelly:

I think that the problem may be with using Doug Knox's OpenWithClear
utility.

After reviewing "right click Open With lists", HCR keys, and HCU keys for
several file extentions, in ALL instances, the DEFAULT MS apps that Doug
Knox's OpenWithClear utility does not clear appear in the "right click Open
With lists", but are entirely ABSENT in the HCR keys and HCU keys.

Why I would want to open an HTML file in Notepad or Wordpad when I have an
excellent programming editor with good HTML syntax highlighting is totally
beyond me! I want to get Notepad and Wordpad out of the "right click Open
With lists".

How about is I post a few HCR keys and HCU keys as IN-LINE text?

Thanks,

Steve
