Remove a reference for an item

A colleague has just updated to a new computer and an excel program is
no longer working with the message "cannot find project or library."
every time he tries to enter data. I looked at the References Dialog Box
and found the reference to the missing Object which was actually a
calender control. I found I could not undo the check and I appreciate
you cannot remove it if it is used in the project but this is not the
case. It was used in a procedure but no longer is but is just
inactivated with the lines having the usual apostrophe at the beginning.
I really need help on how to resolve this as I have no idea. Do I need
to delete the old inactive procedure, clean the project and then uncheck
the references box? Will that stop the project referring to that object?
As you can see I have no idea how to sort this and I have searched posts.
I value any guidance.
