Removal from domain caused logon problem

I seem to have gotten myself into a mess and can't logon to my work issued
laptop now. My CD drive died so in an attempt to connect to my home
computer and used it's CD drive, I put my laptop into my home workgroup and
removed myself from the work domain, thinking I would just put myself back
in when I was done.

To make the change take effect, I had to restart the computer. Now when I
try to logon, I get an error telling me that the domain is incorrect and it
won't let me logon to the laptop at all. I only have a username/password
prompt and no way to change a domain, so I am stuck! Any suggestions as to
how to get in and change a domain or remove this? I am using Windows XP.

I recently locked myself out of my laptop. So I rebooted into Safe Mode, and
then found System Restore and got back to the day before I got into the mess.
It worked for me it might for you too.

This is not quite the error message that you usually get, but the problem is
that after joining the workgroup you can no longer use a domain user account
to logon. You must use a local user account. If you do not know the user
name and password for such an account, you will have to take the machine
back to work where the IT people will presumably know how to logon locally
and rejoin the domain. Unless changed, all Windows XP machines have a local
account called administrator, but you still have to know/guess/hack the
password or use third party software to change it.

By changing the computer from the domain to a workgroup, you have
destroyed the trust between the domain and the machine. In doing so,
you have also rendered your domain login credentials as invalid. You
need to be physically connected to the domain network, you need to have
administrative privileges to the workstation, and you need to have
administrative privileges on the domain. Then you can add the machine
back on to the domain, after having first deleted the computer's old
domain account (unless you've also renamed the computer).
