Removable Drives Cannot Be Read

This started a couple of days ago. I have a WinXP Pro system, with SP2
installed. Currently, the computer will not read from the floppy drive, the
DVD-RW drive, the DVD-ROM drive, or my USB flash drive. When I click on a
drive in Windows Explorer, I get a request to insert a disk. Trying to use
DIR from the command line gives me "Incorrect parameter." The DVD-RW drive
usually shows the column headers for the detail view, but no files. It
continues to try and read the disc for several seconds after the right-hand
pane of Explorer goes blank and diaplays the column headers, but nothing ever
appears.

If I boot in safe mode, the DVD drives appear to work normally. I tested
the media and the flash drive in another computer, and they worked properly.
I have disabled most of the items that were autoloading, including a couple
of services that are unnecessary (SQL Server and the InCD service), but that
did not fix the problem. I am using the AVG virus scanner from Grisoft.
Disabling it (and restarting the computer) did not help. Starting the Remote
Storage Manager service (it was off by default) and restarting the computer
did not help. At boot, the system event log shows two failures: one is a
1394 NIC that is disabled in hardware, the other is the i8042prt.sys driver,
which appears to be a mouse driver. A third failure occurred in the
Removable Storage Manager, when I tried to access a drive with it running:

Source: Removable Storage Service
Category: None
Type: Error
Event ID: 111

RSM could not load media in drive Drive 0 of library SONY DVD RW DRU-710A.
Data: (bytes)
0000: 01 00 00 00

I recently installed TurboTax, but it did not appear to have copy
protection. Any help or insight would be appreciated.

Have you tried 'System Restore'? If not, I suggest you 'Restore' to a time
before the problems began..
