Greetings --

If you connected the PC to the Internet without having first
installed the KB824146 Hotfix, without having first installed an
antivirus application with current virus definition files, and before
enabling a firewall, you're very likely to get infected from any of
the thousands of PCs on the Internet that are constantly broadcasting
the Blaster and/or Welchia worms. It only takes a few seconds of
exposure.

To stay on-line long enough to get the necessary updates, patches,
and removal tools, click Start > Run, and enter "shutdown -a" when the
next RPC countdown begins. This will abort the shut down. Also, make
sure you've enabled a firewall before starting, to preclude any more
intrusions while getting the updates/patches/tools.

Thanks to MS, this is equivalent to more than 90% of Windows XP machines around
the planet I guess...

I always wondered why the Hell they didn't have the firewall activated by
default. It's there but useless. Does John or Jane Doe have the slightest idea
on what a firewall is - thus what for - and how it can be activated? Could have
prevented these overwhelming blaster-and-clones damages.

Greetings --

How can it possibly Microsoft's fault that some people are so
completely unaware of the real world that they'd connect their PCs to
the Internet without first taking the most basic, common-sense
precautions? The dangers of the Internet have been well publicized in
the mass media for years now. Microsoft isn't everybody's "mama."
And if the firewall had been enable by default, you'd be complaining
about Microsoft's presuming to know better than you about how to
configure _your_ PC.
