Remote Host issue

I have been looking at a number of responses to this problem and quite
honestly I am abit ignorant. I have gone into my linksys router in the
forwarding page and entered what I think is correct..entered 3389 "to" 3389,
selected TCP, and entered IP address 192.168.1.1.and enabled. (this is the
same as the router...not sure if this the right number or not), I also went
into a section called UPnp forwarding and I have these sections to fill out
Ext Port - is this for the 3389 I have read about, then I have a section
called Ext Port?? what would go here?..and would the IP address be the same
as 192.168.1.1?

Thanks for any suggestions.

It is highly unlikely the machine in queston has the IP 192.168.1.1... That
is probably the router's internal address.

To expand on Shenan's comments go to "Start -> Run" on the PC you want to
remotely connect to and type 'cmd' in the command window (without the
quote). At the resulting command line type the command ipconfig and note the
reported IP address. Note the PC you want to remotely control should be
using a static LAN IP address.

http://www.portforward.com/networking/static-xp.htm

That is the address you use to address port forwarding through your router.
Ignore the references to UDP Port 3389.

Thanks for these suggestions. I have followed the details in both of the
links to setup a static IP on my computer and the forwarding process for my
linksys router. When I sent an invite to my father and he tried to connect to
me he still got the host resolve issue. So another couple of questions. Does
his computer need to be configured etc, I tohught I read somewhere that the
computer asking for assistance needed to have the forwarding/static IP setup
but not the other end....is this correct. and or do I need to do something
with DSL modem configuration? My setup is I come into my DSL modem with the
signal and them cat5 to my wireless router then to my PC..Thanks again for
your help.

Lets step back a bit since I am getting confused. I thought you were talking
about using Remote Desktop.

Do you want to use Remote Assistance to get help from your father or do you
want to help your father using Remote Assistance?

What is your fathers connection to the internet? ie. DSL, Cable, Dialup,
etc? Is he behind a router?

If your behind a DSL modem its possible the modem is also a router. Check
the users manual or contact your ISP to find out. If it is a router and it
is not in a bridge mode you need to open TCP Port 3389 and forward that to
your router. In addition you need TCP Port 3389 forwarded on your router to
your PCs static LAN IP address.

The same would pertain to your father if he is behind a DSL modem or is
behind a router.

Sorry for this confusion...yes I am talkingg about "RA" , my dad has a cable
modem which is direct to his PC no router...I will check on the modem
regarding the bridge mode etc. I setup the PC and wireless router from your
previous note so I am thinking the modem is still the issue. I will work with
my dad on getting the static IP set up and have him talk to his cable
provider regarding any changes to the modem...if required,

Thanks.

The cable modem will *NOT* be a router. The issue is the possibility the DSL
modem is a router.
