Remote Desktop

I have been trying to configure my remote desktop from my laptop to my
desktop at home - to completely access my desktop when I am away from home.
Here is my present setup:

I have DSL with static IP and my DSL modem is configured as a switch instead
as a router. I have a wireless home network with my desktop, two laptops and
two printers. My desktop is configured with static ip from the router instead
of being assigned automatically.

I am running XP Pro SP2 on the desktop and on the laptops. Also, I am
running Mc Afee anti-virus and Firewall on the desktop and the laptops. I am
using a D Link DI-614 model and configured to use Port 23 to forward my
static ip from my DSL switch to my desktop ip.

Within the home network, I can connect within the three workstations through
remote desktop and control the remote workstation. However, though I can ping
my desktop but when I telnet to it, I get a message that cannot connect to
port 23 and failed. I open the run command and type cmd to open a msdos
screen then ping and telnet through it.

Do I need a third party software like PC Anywhere or is there an add-on from
XP Pro to do remote desktop outside of my home network.

Please help.

You need TCP Port 23 opened on any firewall/NAT/router at the home end. See
this page for troubleshooting help...

Port 23 is normally used for Telnet.

Why did you choose that when you changed from the default? I suggest you use
another port, preferably a high number port if you must change from the
default TCP Port 3389 or better yet run Remote Desktop through a VPN/SSH
tunnel for added security.

Also once you define a port to use... (I also would reccomend sticking with
3389 unless you have multiple computers in you network you want to connect
to) Make sure to visit canyouseeme.org and test the port to see if its open.
Its a good way to test if youve correctly opened the port on the firewalls
routers etc. If the port 3389 is opened and remote desktop is enabled you
should be good to go....
